Sri Lanka is a tear-drop shaped island in the Indian Ocean located to the south of the Indian subcontinent and is one of the most reliable surf holiday destinations in the Indian Ocean. As a year-round surfing destination Sri Lanka has been recognised by the international surfing community for some time now, with the east coast's Arugam Bay boasting an annual international surfing competition and Hikkaduwa hosting National Championship of the Japanese Pro Surfers Association in early November. The slow pace of life coupled with the warmth of the friendly locals makes this place a surfers dream. For a small island, Sri Lanka has many nicknames: Serendib, Ceylon, Teardrop of India, Resplendent Isle, Island of Dharma, Pearl of the Orient. This colourful collection reveals its richness and beauty, and the intensity of the affection it evokes in its visitors. So whether you're an expert or a beginner looking to ride the white stuff for the first time, there's something for everyone! The surfing season in Hikkaduwa starts in October and ends in early May but it is possible to surf other times of the year however the swell can not be guaranteed for more intermediate surfers.

Itinerary

Sri Lanka is one of the best surf holiday spots in the Indian Ocean offering high quality surfing, peaceful, beautiful and very tropical surroundings. The uncrowded beaches are some of the assets of the Sri Lankan coast. Surf in the country is mainly localized between the Southwest and Southeast of the Island. The south west and east coast of Sri Lanka has some excellent reef breaks that are well worth investigating.

The area has a very impressive coral reef that runs just offshore and is populated by exotic fish and sea turtles

North Jetty offers a coral bottom and is a right hand wave that requires a solid swell to break well. When this wave really gets going it can be one of the best rides of your life and offers a long ride with very hollow sections. Benny’s is another spot with a coral bottom this is a very fast left hand wave and can be testing with the wave often breaking over very sharp reef with shallow water, but the rides are again very exciting. This is an experienced only spot.

The main reef offers again a Coral bottom but great right and left hand surfing waves and is a real credit to what Sri Lanka surfing is all about and will be one of the waves you will surf regular on your surf holiday. Inside Reef as it’s adeptly known is a coral bottom that breaks fast and hollow with both left and rights and can be a real thrill seekers ride. The main surfing beach breaks of Hikkaduwa are all sandy and ideal for learning to surf. Just south of Inside Reef (above) there is a number of sandy spots which several types of waves and this area is recommended for the beginner, inexperienced and moderate standard surfer.

The surfing season in Hikkaduwa starts in October and ends in early May.

Accommodation Details

Our surfer’s hotel is located on Narigama Beach in Hikkaduwa directly opposite the super fun beach break and a couple of hundred yards from the infamous “A Frame” Reef Break. If you get too surfed out then why not swim with turtles within 200 yards of the hotel!

The vibe at the hotel is friendly, and warm. Every detail is catered for. The team are happy to arrange any local trips and activities including Cricket games, trips to the mountains to see the Tea fields and walk with Elephants. You will find an indoor video area with music system as well as a computer with internet service.

There are a total of 10 twin rooms, 1 Triple room, 1 double with air-con, all rooms are en-suite. Daily room cleaning is provided as well as a laundry service.

Food can be cooked to order, with special consideration for children’s preferences. The hotel offers a range of daytime snacks and lunch and dinner menus. Bottled water, fresh fruit juices, chilled beers and spirits are available daily.

The outdoor restaurant features a barbecue and tandoori. The chef selects fresh produce daily and provide a range of dishes including fish, seafood, beef, chicken, vegetables, pastas, traditional Sri Lankan curries, & fresh fruit. Whole fish and seafood are cooked on cinnamon wood on the barbecue for our regular buffet dinners. The hotel serves freshly ground Italian coffee and home-made marmalade and fruit ice creams.

The beach is long and wide offering walks to Dodanduwa fishing village to the south. The local fisherman set out their nets and pull in their catch to the beach. The beach is lined with many little restaurants and houses nestled into the palm and coconut trees.
